I am excited to announce that HALPI2 is now available for pre-orders! Go place your order at Hatlabs shop!

The enclosure design has been finalized and the first production batch has been ordered. Similarly, the PCB design has been updated to fix the first prototype issues, and the second prototype batch is on its way. I don’t expect any major changes between the second proto and the final version, but it is fairly certain that minor bugs will still be found in the second proto.

I am really happy with the enclosure design. It is as compact as possible while offering good expansion options and connectivity. The enclosure is made of diecast aluminium, ensuring great robustness and excellent thermal performance.

At this stage, fairly large purchases need to be made to get all components in place for production: PCBs, enclosures, connectors, cables, CM5 modules, SSDs, etc. My plan was to finance these organically using existing product sales, but coinciding the unfortunate tariff war, Hat Labs sales have fallen 70% in the past month or so. This is a bit of a problem, as I need to pay for the production batches before I can ship any products. Here, the pre-orders will play a crucial role in helping us manage these costs and ensure timely delivery of the HALPI2. Getting short-term financing or relying on friends, fools and family are still viable options, but pre-orders help me avoid that and will also help me plan the future production batches and optimize the variants and quantities of the components to be ordered. And if you are willing to pre-order, you will also get a 15% discount on the final price! This offer remains valid until the product launch.

If everything goes well with the second PCB prototype, I expect to be able to ship the first devices end of May. However, there is little margin, so if any connectors or other components are delayed, the shipping date will be pushed back. I will keep you updated on the progress of the project and any changes to the expected shipping date.

Hat Labs and the Global Semiconductor Shortage

Hat Labs and the Global Semiconductor Shortage

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a global semiconductor shortage, caused by partial shutdowns of integrated circuit production facilities due to the global lockdowns early 2020 as well as marked increase in the demand of computers and consumer electronics. As a result, many commonly available chips have become totally unavailable or the price has increased many times over. For example, a common real-time clock chip, DS3231MZ used in SH-RPi cost USD 1.61 in low quantities in August 2020, but now the price has increased to over USD 7 at low quantities, with ship date estimates around May or July, 2022. Some of these components can be easily replaced, but most require at least a partial PCB design with prototype rounds and EMC pre-compliance testing.
